Referendum in Burundi threatens Peace

In an unsurprising move, President Pierre Nkurunziza of Burundi has called for a referendum in May 2018 to change the constitution to enable him to remain in power beyond the two terms stipulated in article 96 of the constitution. Already he is serving a controversial third term which has led to the death of so many Burundians. This referendum poses a serious threat to the Arusha agreement which, among other things, has helped improve ethnic relations in Burundi.  His effort puts him on the growing list of Africa’s presidents who want to remain in power for life.  This list includes presidents of Burundi’s neighboring nations of Rwanda and Uganda.
