Former Malawi’s President Joyce Banda always denied involvement in widespread corruption

Ahead of the 2019 presidential elections, the one term former president and Africa’s second woman head of state, Joyce Banda returned to Malawi her home country after four years abroad. President Banda became head of state after her predecessor Mr. Bingu wa Mutharika died in office.  She was twice on Forbes’ list of most powerful women on earth respectively  71st in 2012 and 47th in 2013.  Jimy Kainja, writing for African Arguments states that her two years presidency (2012-2014) “will always be synonymous with the cashgate scandal, which revealed the systematic looting of public money by civil servants, private contractors and politicians.” She always denied any involvement.
