Meguet Wells
Description of Meguet Parish and
Location of the three well-digging
sites
St. Leon's parish in Meguet, Burkina Faso is spread out over
550 square miles, with a total
population of 50,000 inhabitants. The villages you see on the below
Map of the Parish, that are marked with a cross, all have
small chapels and a catechist who is appointed to be at the service of the
Christian community. Mass is celebrated at least once a month in those
villages.
Kelken is a small rural village with a population of approximately 600
people, made up of Christians, Muslims, and followers of the African Traditional
religions. The people of Kelken are all farmers and herders. They raise cattle,
mules, sheep, goats, chickens, and tiny hens. There are no running streams or
rivers anywhere near. The wells that were all dug by hand... some 40 feet
deep, have run dry because of diminishing yearly rainfalls. The nearest deep
well, which fortunately still has water, is about 1½ miles away. But
everybody flocks to it to satisfy all the human and animal consumption
needs.
This well projects, thanks to the help of those who care an want to help
financially, will provide clean, safe drinking water for all the villagers, and
also bring hope to all those who are talking about getting vegetable gardening
started. Villagers here in Kelken have been waiting for this for so many
years...

| P.S.: |
The geographical situation in the villages of Bogsen and in
Kumseogo (sites where two other wells are urgently needed) is relatively
the same as the one described above, in the village of
Kelken. |
| NOTE: |
The estimated cost of one well will vary according to the depth of the well
and the density of the ground they're digging through... and, by the way, it is
all hand-dug!!! The estimated cost of one bore-hole of 70 meters deep is anywhere between
$9,000 and $10,000, hand- operated water pump
included. |
